Photo by @stephenedwardferry // Berlin, November, 1989 On the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, I am looking back at my memories (both inside my head and inside my files) of that amazing historical moment. In the company of great photojournalists such as Alexandra Avakian (who took to my mind ,the most iconic image of the event), Chris Morris, the incomparable Alfred Yaghobzadeh, Gilles Peress, Anthony Suau, Ron Haviv and Chip Hires I worked day and night to the point of sheer exhaustion, fueled by a sense of history and the elating atmosphere of liberation in the air. Among many anecdotes, I remember taking my film to the airport to be sent to Paris (I worked for the French-American agency Gamma-Liaison at the time, on assignment for Time magazine) in the hands of a fellow photographer. In those days, long before digital photographer was even in the womb, that’s how we did it. There I met a distinguished French Photographer, his arms full of envelopes of film from numerous colleagues, ready to board his flight, and I reminded him to please not pass the film through x-ray machines en route to Paris. He amusedly said, “I know that.” Turns out, to my embarrassment, that was none other than the legendary Raymond Depardon, who took not only one of the most memorable pictures of 1989 but also historic images of the Wall as it was being built. #berlin #fallofthewall #endofColdWar #gammapresseimages #gamma-liaison #Time #reduxpictures #ojorojofabricavisual @alfredyaghobzadehphoto @christopher_vii @ronhaviv_vii @suauanthony @chiphires

🇬🇧 #onthisday 29 years ago DDR politician Günter Schabowski announced in a press conference, there were some new travelling regulations for people from the DDR going west, that eventually caused the end of the Berlin Wall in the night of November 9. 30 years ago today the East German government announced that all GDR citizens could travel into West Berlin / West Germany. The East German govt made a mistake when asked when the new legislation came into effect and said immediately which resulted in thousands of East Berliners gathering at the wall checkpoint. The border guards were confused and started letting people move freely into West Berlin. This date marks the official falling of the wall. Pic II shows the infamous death strip which was patrolled daily for 28 years and contained anti vehicle trenches and fakir (nail beds ).Pic III is one of the watch towers which were erected all along the wall. #berlin #berlinwall #fallofthewall #deathstripberlin #berlingraffiti #thewall #30years #30yearsfallofthewall #30yearsfallofberlinwall

The GlienickerBrucke (Freedom Bridge) Where Spies were Exchanged During the Cold War. This bridge over the Havel River was the border between West Berlin and the historic and independent city of Potsdam in the East, once occupied by Soviet military units and officials. After the Fall of the Wall I was able to drive across and visit the incredible parks, palaces, and historic sites such as Ceilienhof, location of the Potsdam Conference of 1945. #glienickerbrücke #potsdam #reaganlibrary #associatedpress #reuters #spymuseum #berlinwall #angelamerkel #derspiegel #mauerwall30 #berlininstagram #visitberlinofficial #fallofthewall #history #coldwarhistory #bestinberlinphotos #germanytourism #germany_insta #BerlinWall30 #berlinwallfall #wonderlustberlin

#REPOST @europeancommission 📍 Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, Germany | Potsdamer Platz is a famous Berlin Wall memorial in the centre of Berlin, located around 1km from the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building. With the construction of the Berlin Wall in August 1961, Potsdamer Platz was divided in two and left totally desolated. In 1989, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the square became one of the earliest crossing paths from one side of the city to another. . 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, many of its segments can be found all over Europe. What was once a border between people is now a symbol of unity and European values. . 📸 ©️ European Union, 2019 / Photographer: Michele Tantussi . @eukommission #BerlinWall30 #BerlinWall #FallofTheWall #MauerFall30 #MauerFall #Berlin #Germany #EU #EuropeanUnion Reposted from @europeancommission
